A spokesperson for the Newport Beach Police Department has confirmed that the department helped reunite a missing, pure-bred dog with its rightful owner.

The microchopped dog ran away on April 21, according to a report by NBC Los Angeles, and although the pup’s owner saw a woman walk toward him, and pick him up, they quickly disappeared.

Lou Gotowski started hanging up posters– and even created a Facebook page– that offered up a reward for his dog’s safe return.  His friends eventually found the missing Havanese pup on an adoption website.   Gotowski said he tried calling the rescue group but they took his dog’s ad down as soon as he reached out.

They rescue group eventually agreed to bring the dog to the Newport Beach PD to do the exchange.  They initially asked Gotowski to reimburse them $525, which is what they paid to neuter his dog. It’s not immediately clear whether he needed to write a check in order to get the pup back.  Animal control was onsite, the article notes, and a quick scan of the dog’s microchip confirmed that Gotowski was the rightful owner.
